About Us

Our mission here at Tay’s Hermit Foods is to make sure canadian hermit crab owners have access to healthy, fresh, affordable dried food options for their pet crabs.

My name is Tay, and I own and run Tay’s Hermit Foods with the help of my husband, Riley. We believe that the health and well-being of our pets is just as important as our own. Living in northern B.C. Canada, we realized having access to fresh, healthy and affordable hermit crab foods can be difficult. That’s why we decided to create a space where other Canadians can shop for dried hermit crab food with ease.

We make our products in small batches from our home base in the B.C. interior. Our products are always dried from fresh ingredients whenever possible. When the seasons permit, we gather fresh supplies from local gardens, farms and markets.

Riley and I have been hermit crab enthusiasts since 2018. We first became interested in them when we saw this little guy in our local pet store. He wasn’t for sale - he had recently been rescued from someone’s home. The store was waiting to find someone to adopt it. My husband showed particular interest in this guy, so we went home to do our research. We quickly realized that his pet store enclosure was NOT sufficient, and he was likely suffering. We went back to the pet store and offered to adopt him, gave the store some quick information on their needs and why he cannot stay in that little tank anymore. Next thing we know, we’re walking out with him. Not just one crab, but two!

This was our first ever tank set up. We’ve got a few things right, like the 5-1 sand to fiber ratio, and the proper thermometer/hygrometer combo… but a whole bunch of things wrong. Even though there was a lot of things wrong, it was still an improvement. And we did our research daily. We quickly learned what they needed, and made the necessary changes over time.

Today, we have 8 hermit crabs in a 150 gallon tank that sits in our dining room. I adore these little guys, and have either adopted or rescued them all from other hermit crab owners who could no longer care for them. I am so happy I ran into this little guy when I did. I learned about how the ones sold in stores are wild caught, meaning they are taken from their homes and their colonies to be sold as a trinket. PETA has a video on hermit crabs if you want more details about what brutality they endured to come here from their homelands. Ever since learning this, I have actively been advocating for them. Donating when I can to educational campaigns, and convincing people to NOT buy them from pet stores. I have even convinced the local pet store of my hometown to stop ordering them, and to never order them again. I am passionate about animal justice, and being able to speak for those who do not have a voice. I hope that my small business will help educate and spread awareness. Your support directly affects me, my crab children, and the campaigns and educational programs that I donate to.

As a brand new small business, I pledge to donate 1% of all my profits to different organizations associated, affiliated, and approved by Land Hermit Crab Owners Society. You can feel good knowing your purchases from me are going to help other hermit crabs survive and thrive. As my business grows, I will gradually increase my donations. Please share my shop with your other hermit crab owning friends!
